John Sparkman has just enough blue collar to cover up his redneck, and by that I don't mean sittin' around drinkin' beer and raisin' hell. I mean hard work under the sun and after years of being a roofer and a contractor, but mostly roofer who wasn't happy if his hands weren't on it (and writing songs since he was 15) he put together The BlackTop Herd.

BlackTop Herd is the musical home you’ve been looking for, a gritty New South meets Old South band that has the heart of country, with the electric guitars and kick drums of Southern Rock beating in their veins, with just enough progressive rhythms, to move with the music of our time, and featuring the truly remarkable story telling of John Sparkman.
By putting talented former touring band members and studio musicisans, BlackTop Herd came to life! BlackTop Herd is a slice of Amercana topped with old school Country and Rock, with a side of wings that is served up with a sauce that zings ya with a touch of a funkin' grungy rap and the blues. It will make you laugh, cry, think and get ya on your feet and dance.

Meet The Writers
John Sparkman, now prefer's working with the pen and is one of the writer's on Thomas Rhett's "Country Boys Prayer." However, after the Side B album was shelved again, Sparkman go tired of waiting, and has decided that his heart is entertaining, rather than simply the songwriter's stages in Nashville, so he created BlackTop Herd.
A source of inspiration, and an occasional co-writer is John's wife of 24 years, Debi Sparkman. Debi's credits on this album include: "I'm Stuck" and The song she brought to the table, "Last X-Girlfriend. The song "The Same" was one of her Valentines gifts in 2024, by John Sparkman.
Also, Doug Leonard, an Amazing Nashville Artist, and in contention for best Guitar Player on Broadway, is also a co-writer, making up the trio that wrote, "Last X-Girlfriend."
